HISTORY OF HAND DRILLS
Bevel gear hand drills appeared in Europe in the very late 1700’s. The first models had 1 to 1 gears. Between 1820 & 1850 thumbscrew chucks and 3 to 1 gear ratios became popular. During the 1870’s Millers Falls & other domestic makers introduced the modern style hand drill with its long hollow wooden handle and alligator – jaw chuck. In 1914 Duncan Black and Alonzo Decker added an electric motor and revolutionized the hand tool industry.
