Raymond Howard Stevens1
M, b. 6 June 1946, d. 3 March 2007
Pop-up Pedigree
- Birth*: Dell Ray Boyce was born on 6 June 1946 at Holy Cross Hospital, Salt Lake City, Salt Lake Co., Utah, United States of America.1
- Name Variation: As of 6 June 1946, Raymond Howard Stevens was also known as Dell Ray Boyce.1
- He was the son of Gilbert Alger Boyce and Ruby Lou Austin.1
- Adoption*: Ray and his younger brother Dee were taken shopping by their mother in Salt Lake City one day. Ruby went to ZCMI, the most upscale department store in the city, and left without her boys. When mom could not be located, the children were eventually taken to the police station and became wards of the LDS church. They were adopted in 1951 by Melvin James Stevens and his wife Sarah Madeleine (Pollock) Stevens. The Stevens' wanted only the 2-year-old, but the LDS church required that the brothers be adopted together. So Ray, too, became a Stevens.
Old enough to remember living with his mother and grandmother, and stubborn enough to hang onto those memories, Ray fought making an emotional commitment to the Stevens family. The Stevens', on their part, saw only a recalcitrant child who wouldn't meet their behavior standards. They frequently described him as a 'naughty boy', and punished him in the only way they found effective -- they took away the things he enjoyed most: violin lessons at school, and the opportunity to study art. LDS artist Arnold Freeberg, whose drawings illustrate most copies of the Book of Mormon published in the last half of the 20th century, as well as many other well-known LDS installations, was a personal friend of Mel and MadeleineStevens. He recognized Ray's talent and asked to have the boy study with him. The Stevens' declined.
- Name Variation: As of 1951, Raymond Howard Stevens was also known as Ray Stevens.
- Milit-Beg*: Ray began military service on 6 June 1964 at Ogden, Davies, Utah, United States of America. He says he signed up on his 18th birthday to get out of reform school. He did his basic training and Fort Polk, Louisiana and was then stationed at Fort Knox, Kentucky. When the James Bond movie, "Goldfinger", was being filmed at Ft. Knox, they needed a group of soldiers to get gassed as they were marching around the parade ground. Ray became an "actor" as one of those soldiers.1
- Milit-End*: He was discharged from the US Army on 11 April 1968 at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas, United States of America.1
- Note*:
Ray moved to California in January 1974 and settled in Palo Alto, California where he worked for the Episcopal Church. When he and Bonnie moved to Groveland in March, 1977 his three-year residency in Palo Alto was the longest he had ever in his life lived in one place. As staff member at a church, Ray's schedule was flexible, so he was available to help members of the congregation in many ways. He frequently drove "little old ladies" who had either given up driving altogther or preferred not to drive more than a few blocks from home. Cala Lemberger, whose husband had been dean of Bolt Hall, law school at the University of Californa-Berkeley, was one of his favorites. Amy Belle Brenner was often heard referring to him laughingly as "My Gigalo", and even asked if he would accompany her to Europe for a summer. He declined, always uncomfortable at the thought of driving in a strange country on the 'wrong' side of the road. When Kathleen Heinlein needed a break to go to the market or run other errands, Ray stayed with her husband, Rex. Occasionally Rex's brother Bob would be there visiting. Bob is known to most of the world as science fiction author Robert Heinlein. Titles and public recognition meant nothing to Ray. He measured everyone individually by their personal integrity.
In Groveland, Ray held several jobs. Initially, he and Bonnie ran the rental program for Mason Realty, working out of "the little red schoolhouse" -- now the home of Yosemite Bank. Later he worked for Tuolumne County at the Groveland Youth Center, and at Twice as Nice at Half the Price. At Twice as Nice he deveoped a new cadre of "little old ladies" who would come into the store every week, grab a shopping basket, take Ray by the arm and say, "Show me what I should buy today." They always left with a full cart.
One of his favorite jobs was leading group therapy sessions with the Tuolumne County Mental Health therapist, Verna Nosker. It was while he was working with Verna that he got to know Bobbi Bennett, an RN and responder with the Groveland Ambulance. Bobbi was very concerned that the ambulance would frequently take a patient off to the hospital in Sonora and have to leave a distressed spouse at home -- either with no way to get to Sonora, or too distressed to make the drive safely. As they talked they identified other needs among Groveland residence -- feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, visiting the lonely, monitoring the well-being of our seniors living alone. Their ideas grew and they organized a meeting in the Groveland Community Hall attended by 30 or so individuals who caught the fire that Ray and Bobbi ignited. The result was Helping Hands of Groveland.
Ray was always an artist, particularly fond of portraiture and cartooning. While on a camping trip at June Lake about 1985 he stopped at a small gallery occupying an old gas station on the main street of June Lake. There he met Gary Burns, the Tree Wizard. Gary carved faces and trees in wood, mostly in pine knots. Ray was enchanted. The rest of us admired the worked and talked about how difficult it would be to do. Ray said, "Piece of cake." He bought one of Gary's pieces and spent a joyful half-hour watching Gary carve. For at least two years afterward we harassed Ray. "If it's really a piece of cake, show us what you can do!" Finally he got out the Dremel tools and tried his hand at carving knots. Before long he became "The Knotty Old Man". He sold from the trunk of the car, at craft fairs, and through several galleries, but his favorite venue was in the garden at Mountain Sage Nursery. He'd sit at his workbench, working on a knot, a cane or a walking stick, and visit with everyone who came by. He loved for people to stop and watch him carve -- something he hated when he was drawing.1
- Note:
Ray and Bonnie spent the weekend of February 13-16, 1986 making Cursillo at St. Francis' Episcopal Church in Turlock. It was a wet and nasty weekend, with heavy rains and flooding all over central California. Cocooned as candidates in the retreat weekend, with watches and access to the outside world denied them, Ray and Bonnie experienced only God's unconditional love. As it is for so many, Cursillo was a life-changing experience for Ray. Although he had always believed in God, he really didn't know first had about uncondional love. As a result of his Cursillo experience, he could forgive himself, forgive others, and spend the rest of his own life reaching out to others in need.
Mary Reese, a team member that Cursillo weekend, remembers looking out at the group of candidates and thinking to herself, "I wonder why those two are together? She looks like such a sophisticated lady, and he is so rough -- like he just fell off the turnip truck." Later, she said, she got to knew the beautiful person inside that rough exterior. Even later, she watch Bonnie and Ray function together, reflecting off of each other and truly becoming two halves of one whole. "Then I understood," she said.1
- Death*:
Raymond Howard Stevens died on 3 March 2007 at 20803 Ferretti Road, Groveland, Tuolumne Co., California, United States of America, at age 60 after battling lung cancer for 2-1/2 years. He had finally beaten the cancer, but was left with an immune system so compromised that he had no strength to fight a common bladder infection. His passing was peaceful, with family and friends at his bedside.1,2
- Misc*: It was fitting that on Earth Day, 2007, a garden was planted in Ray's memory at Mountain Sage Nursery. The garden where he always carved was remodeled to include a sun-loving variety of Japanese Maple, surrounded by reeds, grasses, and heuchera to provide year-round color either with blooms or foliage. Jack Welch from Greeley Hill made a metal plaque depicting a Knotty Old Man and saying, "In Memory of Ray". Steve Costa, tree-trimmer and former co-worked of Bonnie's at Hetch Hetchy, added a pine bench where Ray always put his carving bench.1
- Burial*: Ray asked that his ashes be scattered off Diamond Head in Hawaii. He loved Hawaii-- the people, the weather, the sense of place. He will also be memorialized at the Divide Cemetery between Big Oak Flat and Groveland once their memorial wall is built; ashes scattered.1
