Margaret Dick
F, b. 3 July 1835, d. 9 July 1905
Pop-up Pedigree
- Christening*: In 1915, Tuolumne County opened a new road, an alternate route from Jacksonville to Big Oak Flat, paralleling Moccasin Creek and traversing the east side of the canyon of Grizzly Gulch. The old, tortorous stage route crossed Moccasin Creek near the bottom of Moccasin Hill and climbed 2000' up the west side of the canyon in a mere 2 miles. Near the top 0f Moccasin Hill stood the Priest Hotel where most travelers stopped for refreshment and often to spend the night. By 1915 the hotel was operated by Jessie Corcoran, niece of the original proprietess whom everyone had known as Margaret Priest. So well known was the establishment that the hill became popularly known as Priest Grade. No records exist documenting the birth date of Margaret, the youngest daughter of John Dick and Marion Alexander. The parish register at Muiravonside, Stirlingshire, Scotland records that Margaret was baptised on 3 July 1835. By Scottish tradition, the baptism would have occurred within a few days, or at least a few weeks, of the birth; Presumed wife of Alexander Kirkwood.2

- Death*: John Corcoran died on 25 September 1889 at Groveland, Tuolumne Co., California, United States of America. The family story, told by Wally Anker, says that John Corcoran died at what was then the Raboul Store in Groveland. After Mass in Big Oak Flat he had gone by wagon into Groveland "for a bite to eat". On leaving the establishment, he was kicked in the head by one of his team, leaving him obviously very seriously injured. Word was sent to Sonora to bring back a doctor, and John was taken into the store -- which, among other things, sold coffins. John died before the doctor arrived. Because he had gone to Mass, the descendants believed he died on a Sunday. In fact, he died on a Wednesday.1,8
